Hobart invited for Guyana’s Global Super League will be held in July this year with the Hurricanes hoping to send a strong side.
Hobart invited in Guyana with the tournament being moved to July this year.
The Hurricanes, who are managed by Cricket Tasmania, won the BBL for the first time this January and were asked to participate in the GSL. After Cricket Victoria sent a squad to the competition last year, which was played in December, wearing state colours, they would be the second Australian side to participate.
Because the competition took place during Australia’s domestic season, Victoria came second with a squad led by former New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson and including current Netherlands captain Scott Edwards and a few development players.
Cricket Tasmania will field as strong a side as they can muster and send a team to play under the Hurricanes banner. The competition will take place in July during Australia’s Caribbean Test trip, and right before the country’s five-match Twenty20 International series against the West Indies.
Beau Webster, an Australia Test all-rounder, has been signed by the Hurricanes, but if he goes on a Caribbean tour, he may be disqualified. Tim David and Nathan Ellis, two regulars for Australia in T20I, are probably going to be on the West Indies T20I tour. Another person who could be considered for that series is Riley Meredith.
Although he has not yet, David is anticipated to re-sign with the Hurricanes in the BBL. Since Australia’s three-format quicks are expected to be rested following the World Test Championship final and three Test matches in the Caribbean, Ellis, who is under a CA contract unlike David, may be held out to stay fresh for the T20I series. It is understood that Cricket Tasmania has questioned Cricket Australia regarding Ellis and David’s availability for the GSL.
After playing one game for the Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League this year, it is believed that David may also be eligible to play for the Rangpur Riders, who won the GSL last year.
There have been talks that the GSL tournament could be held in February in future years, therefore the dates may change once more. Australian teams would find it extremely difficult to compete in such a change. Last year, the Western Australia/Perth Scorchers were invited to play, but they turned it down because it was in December.
