Højlund looking to stay while Amorim gives no guarantees with regards to his future at Manchester United this summer.
Højlund vows to ‘fight for place’ but Amorim admits striker could leave Manchester United.
Despite United’s desire to add a new striker, Rasmus Højlund is adamant that he wants to stay and battle for his spot at Old Trafford. After Højlund scored in Wednesday’s 4-1 preseason victory over Bournemouth, Amorim was unable to provide the Danish international with any assurances over his future.
Following a challenging season in which they scored 44 goals in 38 games en route to a dismal 15th-place finish, United is interested in signing either Ollie Watkins or Benjamin Sesko. Despite getting the opening goal in Chicago, Højlund has struggled since joining from Atalanta for £72 million two years ago, scoring 14 goals in 62 league games. Ethan Williams, Amad Diallo, and Patrick Dorgu extended the lead, but a de Ligtown goal gave Bournemouth some solace.
“The most important [thing] for me is to keep working hard and stay focused and then we’ll see what happens,” Højlund said. “My plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot.”
“Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me,” Højlund said. “I’m more than ready.”
Højlund has put in a lot of effort at United, but he hasn’t been rewarded with goals or steady service. Amorim stated, “I’m really happy with Rasmus, but I don’t know what is going to happen until the market ends.”
“The important thing is that Rasmus is scoring goals. He’s connecting really well with the team. He’s improving. I don’t know what is going to happen until the market is closed. We suffered a lot because of the lack of goals last season.”
