[Saba Sports News] The suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) by the International Cricket Council (ICC) is multi-faceted. The ICC, following an emergency board meeting, decided to suspend SLC to prevent a government takeover amidst allegations of corruption. This move supports the elected president Shammi Silva and his team, recognized by the ICC as legitimate directors.
The decision counters attempts by Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe and former cricketer Arjuna Ranatunga to overhaul SLC’s constitution and establish government control. Despite a temporary court stay on this move, the ICC’s action intends to uphold SLC’s autonomy.
The suspension, announced after a virtual ICC board meeting, cites serious breaches of obligations by SLC, especially regarding autonomy and non-interference by the government. This decision coincides with the end of Sri Lanka’s participation in the ongoing World Cup.
The suspension raises concerns about Sri Lanka hosting the Under-19 World Cup in January 2024 and the potential halt of ICC funding. The issue will be a key topic at the ICC board meeting on November 21, where Silva, though representing a suspended board, is expected to attend.
The ICC’s decision reflects inconsistency with its past actions, having not suspended Cricket South Africa for similar government interventions but having previously suspended Zimbabwe Cricket. The ICC Chair Greg Barclay officially informed SLC of its suspension, emphasizing the need for SLC to meet specific conditions for reinstatement.
