[Saba Sports News] The International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Friday, citing that the national cricket board has breached its obligation by allowing the government to interfere in the cricketing matters.
While this may mean that Sri Lanka will not be allowed to participate in any ICC events until the suspension is lifted, the entire conditions of it will be revealed in due course.
“The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of the ICC with immediate effect,” the ICC issued a press release.
“The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka. The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course,” the ICC statement added.
This ICC decision comes in the aftermath of the Sri Lanka government terminating the entire SLC board following the team’s poor performance in the ODI World Cup 2023.
To add to the saga, Sri Lanka’s court of appeal reinstated the sacked board officials by the country’s sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe.
This back-and-forth government intervention has promoted the ICC to suspend Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership.
