India and England square off with a lot riding on the game and having the backdrop of a contest full of jeopardy.
India and England – A World Cup game with plenty of jeopardy.
One indication that a major game is approaching is the presence of people selling replica jerseys outside a stadium. As early as Friday afternoon, two days before the India vs. England Women’s World Cup 2025 match, sellers were seen outside Holkar Stadium in Indore selling caps, flags, and jerseys bearing the numbers “Smriti 18” and “Harman 23” among others.
To save their next two games from being knockouts, India needs to win this match. They enter it having only four points from four games and coming off back-to-back losses to South Africa and Australia. However, despite a fierce scare from Pakistan, England is yet to drop a game in this tournament.
Since their last game, India has been off for a week. They had one day off after arriving in Indore on Monday, so they travelled to Ujjain and participated in full-tilt training sessions on Wednesday and Friday. Both vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur chose to workout on optional days in between.
Given that only two of the four semi-final positions are still up for grabs, India is aware of how important this game is based on the rigour and attention to detail of their practice. However, their recent performance versus England ought to strengthen their confidence. India has won five of the six One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between the two teams since the 2022 World Cup.
England has surpassed pre-tournament expectations with the new coaching staff of Charlotte Edwards and Nat Sciver-Brunt. Of the 30 wickets the side has at this World Cup, 24 have been taken by its spinners. Only Heather Knight and Sciver-Brunt have demonstrated the kind of tenacity required to win these tournaments, so the batting is still an issue.
Still “if someone had said to me a few weeks ago, we’d be in the position we are in, having been unbeaten, I would have taken it,” Edwards said on Saturday. “Our best cricket is in front of us. These are the occasions you want to play or be a part of as a player and as a coaching staff.”
A sellout crowd in Indore is about to be treated to a high-profile game with lots of jeopardy.
