India recall T Dilip back as fielding coach, handed one-year extension.
Former India Men’s team fielding coach T Dilip is prepared to return to the national squad. A one-year interim extension has been offered to the Hyderabad-based coach, who was previously employed by Rahul Dravid and then by Gautam Gambhir for over a year. Next month, he will travel to England with the Indian squad.
It was generally assumed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would not extend Dilip’s contract, which was originally scheduled to expire in May. Indeed, a BCCI official made it apparent to him, Abhishek Nayar, and a few other support staff members that they would be relieved of their responsibilities.
Rohit Sharma was known to be close to those coaches. It was claimed that the head coach favoured a small and trimmed support staff because Gautam Gambhir was allegedly positioning himself to have a more significant role in the Indian squad setup. As a result, along with a few other coaching staff members, batting coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach T Dilip were relieved of their responsibilities.
It is now known, nevertheless, that Rohit Sharma persuaded Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI to keep T Dilip on as fielding coach. Dilip’s situation was different from Nayar’s, who is also believed to be close to Rohit, decision to resign and join the Kolkata Knight Riders.
According to sources, Rohit specifically asked Gambhir to keep Dilip even after declaring his retirement from Test cricket. His initial replacement, Ryan ten Doeschate, will continue to serve as an assistant coach.
A few players of the Test squad have also arrived in England, along with the India A team. Every player, with the exception of Akash Deep, has checked into the Kent team hotel. Akash Deep is anticipated to join the team in the coming days, well in advance of the first unofficial Test match between the England Lions and India A, which is set for Canterbury from May 30 to June 2. On June 6, the main Indian Test team is scheduled to leave Mumbai.
