[Saba Sports News] Geoff Allardice, CEO of the International Cricket Council (ICC), stated that the International Olympic Council (IOC) will decide Afghanistan’s participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This development is significant due to the plight of Afghanistan’s female cricket players, many of whom have been in exile since the Taliban’s resurgence in 2021.
Cricket’s inclusion in the LA28 Olympics, particularly T20, was confirmed in October, reflecting its popularity and appeal to younger audiences. The IOC has approved a six-team format for both male and female competitions. The LA28 organizers and ICC are currently planning the competitive structure and qualifying process, emphasizing gender equality in line with the Olympic spirit.
The future of Afghanistan’s women’s cricket team remains a concern, with most contracted players seeking refuge abroad since August 2021, leaving the team non-functional. However, the male team may still have a chance for the 2028 Olympics.
Allardice remarked that the IOC has been monitoring the situation in Afghanistan and will address the status of the Afghan National Olympic Committee. He acknowledged that the ICC’s stance on supporting Afghan cricket aligns with other international sports organizations. The IOC’s decision will thus be pivotal in determining Afghanistan’s Olympic future and cricket’s evolving presence in global sports.
