[Saba Sports News] England batter Joe Root has drawn a distinction between Caribbean legend Chris Gayle, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.
Root, one of the best Test batter in the England team, stated in an interview with The Times of India that age should not be the sole criterion for omitting players like Rohit and Kohli from the team. He further cited the example of the “Universal Boss” Gayle, who has played T20 cricket for an extended period.
“I think it’s very dangerous to write off players like Virat and Rohit solely based on their age. Look at how long Chris Gayle, for example, has played T20 cricket,” said Root.
“Some of the world’s best players have had longer careers, especially in T20 cricket, and have delivered outstanding performances. As long as you’re fit, you can continue to play,” he added.
Notably, Kohli, who is 34 years old, and Rohit, who is 36 years old, have not played any T20I since the semi-final match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 between India and England. Since then, Hardik Pandya has been given the charge of a young brigade, leading India’s T20 side.
