Jaffna Kings and Colombo Strikers struck off from LPL 2025 after the SLC has officially terminated their contracts.
Jaffna Kings and Colombo Strikers are the franchises to be ousted this time by a league that has struggled to hold on to franchise owners.
Two Lanka Premier League (LPL) teams have been eliminated by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in advance of the 2025 season, which is scheduled for July and August.
Despite being in its sixth year, the LPL no longer has any of its initial five proprietors. Since they joined the LPL in the second season, Jaffna Kings really had the longest ownership history. As a result of their departure, the Jaffna team, which has won three of the four LPL competitions thus far, is set to acquire a third owner. Previously known as the Colombo Kings and Colombo Stars, this will be the fourth Colombo franchise.
The LPL no longer has any franchise owners with a history dating back past 2024 as a result of these two departures. Last year, the Galle Marvels, Dambulla Sixers, and Kandy Falcons franchises were all acquired by new owners.
SLC’s reasons for terminating the franchises was “failure to fulfill their contractual obligations”, though the board did not elaborate on what these failures were. “Sri Lanka Cricket and the IPG Group (the LPL’s organising partners) remain committed to upholding the integrity, standards, and success of the Lanka Premier League” the board release said.
SLC has not yet released the dates for this year’s tournament.
