Jamie Vardy puts out heartfelt apology after Leicester relegation was confirmed with five games remaining in the season.
Jamie Vardy did not mince his words as he put out a statement apologizing to the fans after his Leicester City side were relegated from the Premier League.
After losing to Liverpool at home on Sunday, Leicester was demoted with five Premier League games remaining. With that match, Leicester lost at home for the ninth time in a row without scoring a goal, setting a new record.
The Leicester captain Vardy’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, and it is uncertain if the team will extend it. After getting promoted last summer, the 38-year-old signed a 12-month contract.
In a message posted on social media on Monday, Vardy said: “No words I have can ever express my feelings of anger and sadness with the way this season has gone. There are no excuses.
“Collectively, as players and as a club, we failed. There is simply no hiding, and I refuse to entertain any suggestion of doing so. Having been at this club for so long, we’ve experienced so many highs and successes – and this season has been nothing but miserable and for me personally, a total embarrassment. It hurts, and I know you’re feeling it too.
“To the fans: I’m sorry. Sorry we haven’t performed, and sorry we end the 2025 season with such a s*** show.”
The former England striker, who cost £1 million to join the team from Fleetwood in 2011, is considered one of Leicester’s best players because he helped the team win the FA Cup in 2020–21 and the Premier League in 2015–16.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, the manager of Leicester, is also set to meet with the club’s management this week, raising questions about his future. Although he has a contract that expires in 2027, his future is very uncertain.
Van Nistelrooy’s record since taking over for Steve Cooper highlights Leicester’s terrible season, which marks their second relegation to the Championship in three seasons. In his last 18 games, the 48-year-old has lost 16 of them.
Leicester has only won four league games since Van Nistelrooy took over as manager in December. They have 18 points from 33 games this season and will go to in-form Wolves on Saturday.
