Jason Behrendoff signs off from state cricket after 16 years of representing Western Australia but will play t20 cricket.
Jason Behrendoff has called time on his 16-year long state career for Western Australia.
The 35-year-old’s announcement comes on the back of a successful stint with the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL). He ended the tournament as the BBL’s leading wicket-getter in the tournament.
While he has announced state retirement, he has implied that he will continue playing T20 cricket. This comes after he recently put pen to paper on a 3-year deal to play for the Melbourne Renegades.
Behrendoff has also kept himself available for selection in the National team. He has represented Australia in 17 T20i’s and 12 ODI’s.
“It is the end of one chapter which has been a really exciting one,” Behrendorff said after announcing his retirement on Wednesday. “It’s been so much fun. I’ve been able to live my childhood dream playing state cricket to then have played cricket for Australia as well. The WACA ground has been my home for so long now.”
Despite having a brief Shield career and playing during WA’s protracted title drought, Behrendorff turned arguably one of the best performances in the history of the game in 2017 when he took 9 for 37 in Victoria’s opening innings at the WACA. Terry Alderman’s 14 for 87 match haul is the only one that surpasses his 14 for 89 total, which was the second-best numbers by a bowler from Western Australia.
Behrendorff has been viewed as a possible Test replacement for Mitchell Johnson before to his miserable string of injuries. Behrendorff was a desirable option due to his impressive swing with the new ball and his ungainly bounce. He was 6 feet 4 inches tall.
In the shorter forms, he was constantly on the periphery for Australia. In a 64-run victory over eventual champions England at Lord’s in the 2019 World Cup, he took five wickets, which was the high point of his international career.
Although Behrendorff does not currently have any intentions for a T20 franchise, he ought to be in high demand. He had previously played for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL for a few seasons. In 2023, he had an exceptional season with 14 wickets. However, he had a strange leg injury while batting during training last year, which unfortunately ended his chances of returning to MI on the eve of the event.
