Indian cricket captain and premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, experienced back spasms during the second day of the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). After delivering just one over post-lunch, Bumrah left the field and was subsequently taken to a local hospital for precautionary scans.
Prasidh Krishna, Bumrah’s fellow pacer, addressed the media regarding the situation: “Jasprit Bumrah has a back spasm. The medical team is monitoring him, so let’s see.”
A source close to the team provided further insights, stating that while Bumrah is expected to be fit to bat in India’s second innings, a decision on his bowling participation will be made based on his condition the following morning.
Bumrah’s absence from the bowling attack could significantly impact India’s performance. He has been a standout performer in the series, leading the wicket-taking charts with 32 wickets at an impressive average of 13.06.
Despite Bumrah’s absence, the Indian bowling unit showcased resilience. Prasidh Krishna led the attack, securing three wickets for 42 runs, contributing to dismissing Australia for 181, granting India a narrow first-innings lead.
The Indian team management is exercising caution with Bumrah’s injury, especially considering his history of back issues. In January 2023, he missed the home series against Sri Lanka due to a back injury and underwent back surgery in March 2023. His return to international cricket in August 2023 was marked by his leadership in the series against Ireland.
The final decision regarding Bumrah’s participation as a bowler in the ongoing Test will be contingent upon his assessment by the medical team. His potential absence from the bowling lineup could influence India’s strategy as they aim to level the series and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
As the match progresses, the Indian team and its supporters remain hopeful for Bumrah’s swift recovery, acknowledging his pivotal role in the squad’s success.
