Due to an injury, Shamar Joseph, a fast bowler for the West Indies, will not play in the two-Test series against India next month. Johann Layne, an uncapped pace bowling all-rounder, will take his position.
The nature of Joseph’s injury was not disclosed in a CWI tweet, which just revealed that he had been ruled out and would be reassessed prior to the white-ball tour of Bangladesh. West Indies will play three ODIs in Bangladesh starting on October 18 and three T20Is from October 27 to November 1 following the conclusion of the Test matches in India on October 14.
After flying to New Zealand for an all-format tour including of three ODIs, three Tests, and five T20Is, the West Indies will have a hectic touring season. Starting on September 27, they will play Nepal in three Twenty20 Internationals in the United Arab Emirates.
Joseph began his Test career with a five-for in his maiden match against Australia in January 2024, and he has since played 11 Test matches for 51 wickets at an average of 21.66.
Layne, 22, has averaged 22.28 and taken 66 wickets in 19 first-class games. He has also scored 495 runs at 19.03. In 34 red-ball innings, he has three four-fors and four five-wicket hauls.
In June, Layne participated in two four-day games for West Indies A against the South Africa A team that was on tour. He bowled one wicket in each of the three innings he played in and scored 62 runs in four innings with a best of 34.
In the most recent domestic first-class campaign, however, he had far greater success for West Indies Academy, finishing with a six-for against Windward Islands. In six matches during the competition, Layne took 27 wickets at an average of 15.88, including two five-fors and two four-fors.
The speed attack, which also includes all-rounder Justin Greaves, will include Layne, Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, and Anderson Phillip. The spin options will be Jomel Warrican, Khary Pierre, and skipper Roston Chase.
