Jonas Eidevall steps down as Arsenal women’s manager after a wretched run of results in the Women’s Super League.
Jonas Eidevall has resigned as the Arsenal head coach, the Women’s Super League club have announced.
The Swede had been in command since 2021 and had won the League Cup twice. He was under a lot of strain following his team’s crushing loss to Bayern Munich in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday and her team’s WSL loss to Chelsea at home on Saturday. In their previous WSL match, Arsenal and Everton drew at home.
“We can confirm that Jonas Eidevall has resigned from his position as head coach of our women’s first team and leaves us with immediate effect,” Arsenal said.
Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, said: “We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements here since joining us in 2021. Th club have great respect for the dedication and commitment he showed to our women’s first team. We also recognise the role he has played in the growth and development of Arsenal Women. We all wish him the very best for the future.
“Our focus will now turn to the process of appointing a new head coach. Also in the meantime supporting Renée, as she takes interim charge of the team starting with two important fixtures this week.”
The day before Arsenal’s home European match against Vålerenga, Eidevall tends to his resignation. That game and Sunday’s West Ham will be managed in the interim by first team assistant coach Renée Slegers. The team declared that they were actively seeking a new head coach.
In his three full seasons, Eidevall guided his team to two second-place finishes and two third-place finishes. He also advanced to the 2023 Champions League semifinals. However, his standing with supporters seemed to suffer significantly after his team was unable to advance past the qualifying rounds of the previous season’s Champions League.
Arsenal has five points from their first four league games of the season following one victory, two draws, and their derby loss. Following Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea, Eidevall addressed enquiries about his future.
“I fully understand that people are disappointed when we don’t win football matches and we are also really disappointed. We are really hurting, I’m hurting, the players are hurting. We want to do that better.”
