Jonathan Trott set to stay on as Afghanistan head coach after the ACB gives him a 1-year extension till 2025.
Jonathan Trott will continue as Afghanistan men’s head coach till the end of 2025.
For personal reasons, he will not be leading the other forms, but his next job will be the ODI portion of Afghanistan’s multi-format tour of Zimbabwe. Nawroz Mangal will serve as assistant coach and Hamid Hassan as head coach in his place.
After the squad had a very successful 2024, the Afghanistan Cricket Board decided to extend Trott’s contract by another 12 months. Afghanistan advanced to the World Cup semi-finals for the first time that year after defeating Australia and New Zealand in the T20 competition’s Group- and Super-Eights rounds in the USA and the West Indies. Since then, they have won ODI series in Sharjah against Bangladesh and South Africa.
Next year, Afghanistan will make its first appearance in the Champions Trophy, the next big international competition. Following a campaign that included victories over England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, they were among the top eight teams on the 2023 ODI World Cup points table, earning them a spot in the tournament.
Trott started an 18-month term in July 2022, which was extended by one year in January 2024. Since his appointment, Afghanistan has won 20 of their 44 T20I matches and 14 of their 34 ODI matches.
Trott is serving as head coach for the first time with Afghanistan. Throughout the 2021 T20 World Cup, he served as a consultant for Scotland. In his playing career, he amassed 3835 runs at an average of 44.08 in 52 Test matches and played a significant role in England’s 2010–11 away Ashes triumph. He amassed 2819 runs at an average of 51.25 in ODI cricket, including four hundreds and 22 fifties.
