The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Brendon McCullum as the new white-ball head coach, starting January 2025.
McCullum, who has already made an impact as the red-ball coach, will now take on the additional responsibility of leading the white-ball squad.
England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler, currently sidelined with a calf injury, expressed his excitement about working with McCullum and learning from him.
“I have a bit of a relationship with Baz, but I’m looking forward to spending more time with him and digging into the cricket side of things. He will help me so much as a captain,” Buttler shared.
He added, “We’re similar in how we see the game, but spending time with him will open my eyes to new things. I want this to be the most enjoyable phase of my career, helping players reach their potential and aiming for the big events ahead.”
Buttler noted their shared aggressive approach to the game and is eager to make the next stage of his career a memorable one. Despite England’s struggles under Buttler’s leadership in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup 2024, where they failed to reach the finals, Buttler has retained the captaincy.
His partnership with McCullum will be crucial as England navigates a transition phase, with younger players stepping up as veterans like Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, and Jason Roy are phased out.
