Jose Mourinho’s hilarious protest gets him booked at Fenerbache’s match in the Turkish Super League against Antalyaspor.
Jose Mourinho’s penchant for the hyperbole is a known fact in the footballing world. Throughout his managerial career, there are instances of him rubbing people the wrong way with his antics.
However, his latest histrionics on the touchline might just take the cake.
José Mourinho, the manager of Fenerbahce at the moment, was booked by the referee on Sunday after he objected to a VAR ruling that disallowed a goal by setting up a laptop in front of a TV camera and projecting an image to demonstrate that the offside call was wrong.
The Portuguese manager, who formerly managed Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Manchester United, told reporters that he thought his striker Edin Dzeko was onside and showed them a frame from the shot’s preparation to support his claim.
“For us, it’s a good goal,” Mourinho said after the 2-0 win at Antalyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig. “I like good VAR … I just want a VAR that helps the referee to take the right decisions.”
The Turkish Super Liga decided to employ foreign video assistance referees for the remainder of the 2023–24 season after Fenerbahce chairman Ali Koc accused the officials of being biassed against his team in April of last year.
Fenerbahce, the runners-up from the previous season, are three points behind Galatasaray, the champions, in second place in the standings with 16 points from seven games. On Thursday, Mourinho’s team travels to FC Twente in the Europa League.
