Josh Inglis gets leadership role for rest of Pak white-ball series as the senior players have been given time off.
Josh Inglis has been named the interim T20I captain for the upcoming series against Pakistan.
With the absence of Marsh and Head, he will lead in the third ODI in Perth with Cummins, Smith, and Hazlewood all resting.
After being accepted by the board on the selectors’ suggestion. Inglis, 29, will become Australia’s 14th T20I captain and 30th ODI skipper. Due to paternity leave and Test preparation, Head, who captained the team in a match in England in September while Marsh was away, and Marsh, the team’s permanent T20I captain, will not be able to play in the series against Pakistan. To get ready for the summer, Smith and Cummins, the Test and ODI captain, are not in the T20 series.
Inglis will take over as captain for the third ODI against Pakistan, which will conclude preparations for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Cummins, Smith, Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Marnus Labuschagne will not play. Australia’s Perth squad now includes Josh Philippe, Spencer Johnson, and Xavier Bartlett. Lance Morris is in the team, having covered for Hazlewood in Melbourne during a Shield match for New South Wales. As a result, Hazlewood will only play one ODI during the Adelaide series.
Given that he hasn’t led at the BBL level like his teammates Matt Short, Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, and Nathan Ellis have. Inglis will come as a surprise to some. However, many people respect his tactical acumen and leadership abilities. In November 2022, he was named captain of a formidable Prime Minister’s XI in a first-class match against the West Indies by this selection panel.
“Josh is an integral member of the ODI and T20I teams. And a highly respected player on and off the field,” chair of selectors George Bailey said. “He has led Australia A [Prime Minister’s XI] previously and bring tactical nous and a positive approach to the role.
“Josh will receive great support from Matt Short and Zampa, along with senior players including Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.”
