Josip Stanisic admits pushing ballboy was ‘a bit stupid’ in exit at Inter.
Josip Stanisic of Bayern Munich called it “stupid” of him to knock a ballboy off his seat after he threw the ball away during Wednesday’s Champions League match against Inter.
Inter advanced to the semi-finals 4-3 on aggregate thanks to a 2-2 draw in the second leg at San Siro.
Stanisic attempted to rapidly get the ball back into play as Bayern was pushing for a late winner. When the ballboy threw the ball away from him, Stanisic pushed him to the ground in rage. The defender evaded punishment from the referee, but the Inter bench jumped up to challenge him.
“Every team in the world wastes time when they’re leading,” Stanisic told the German newspaper Abenzeitung after the game. “It was a bit stupid of me to push him there.”
The Bayern coach, Vincent Kompany, reflected on the injury crisis that hit his side before the tie. Bayern were without a clutch of important players for both legs. “I think the big issue, before Inter, was injuries,” Kompany said. “We had to understand what we could do without [Hiroki] Ito, [Dayot] Upamecano, [Jamal] Musiala, [Manuel] Neuer, [Alphonso] Davies, [Kingsley] Coman, [Aleksandar] Pavlovic.”
Despite those issues, Kompany’s team performed well in both games and caused Inter to suffer, but they will not play in the championship game at their home stadium, Allianz Arena.
“The harsh reality is that we will not play the Champions League final at home,” Kompany said. “We can’t change that. The other aspect is the performance; we know we have done enough to win these games.”
