Kirby Short appointed head of Victoria Cricket as she moves into the role after time as a broadcaster and Queensland Cricket director.
Kirby Short, a former captain of the Brisbane Heat who won the WBBL, has been named the new head of female cricket for Cricket Victoria.
Short, 38, played 67 games in the WBBL as a spinning all-rounder and led the Heat to consecutive WBBL victories in 2018–19 and 2019–20. During her long WNCL career, she also captained Queensland Fire. Following Sharelle McMahon’s resignation last year to return to netball in a high performance role, she takes over as Victoria’s new director of female cricket under general manager of high performance Graham Manou.
Although Short resigned from playing in 2020, he has continued to be involved in the sport as a commentator for Fox Sports and Channel Seven and as a director with Queensland Cricket. Short stated that she is thrilled to be joining Victoria, where she has family ties, even if she is from Queensland.
“My grandfather, Mick Harvey grew up in Fitzroy and was a proud Victorian, so it seems very fitting that I have the privilege of contributing to the advancement of women’s cricket in this state,” Short said. “Victoria has a rich history in the sport, and I’m eager to take on this new challenge in Melbourne, working with the talented players and dedicated staff to build on that legacy.”
“We’re pleased to welcome Kirby to Cricket Victoria for what is a critical role in our cricket performance program,” Manou said. “Kirby’s leadership qualities, combined with her extensive experience in elite cricket, will be invaluable as we continue to invest in and elevate women’s cricket in our state.”
