Leeds United pip Burnley to the title after comeback victory against relegated Plymouth courtesy a last-minute winner.
Leeds United win the Championship title as they won 2-1 at Plymouth Argyle, whose relegation was confirmed.
Leeds, who were promoted back to the Premier League last month after two seasons away, won the title on goal differential when Burnley defeated Millwall 3-1.
Shortly after the Plymouth forward had clipped the Leeds upright, the outstanding Mustapha Bundu’s shot bounced off the post and in off Sam Byram, giving Argyle the lead.
Until Willy Gnonto scored Solomon’s cross early in the second half, Leeds, who led the table heading into the final day, were continually frustrated by a tenacious Plymouth team.
With 17 minutes remaining, a Joel Piroe goal for the visitors was disallowed for offside as Daniel Farke’s team looked for the winner they knew was need to win the championship.
The visiting Leeds supporters went berserk as Solomon cut in from the left and fired low into the bottom corner, just when it looked like they might have to settle for second place.
Leeds got off to a strong start as Conor Hazard saved attempts from Joe Rodon and Brenden Aaronson before they fell behind.
A minute before the goal, Bundu had warned Leeds by beating three players and then launching a shot that just missed the outside of the post.
Moments later, the resurgent forward from Sierra Leone cut in from the left, and his low effort bounced in off a defenceless Byram and came back off the far post, causing the net to bulge.
Willy Gnonto, Byram, and Ao Tanaka all had half-chances, but Leeds were unable to come up with another strong opening before halftime.
The second half began as the first had finished, with Piroe firing over once more before Solomon crossed low from the byline and Gnonto levelled from close range.
Halfway through the second half, Byram’s glanced header went wide of the post, and Piroe’s attempt was disallowed after Gnonto was deemed offside for receiving the ball and then crossing it for his teammate. Replays indicated that this judgement was extremely close.
As word spread that Burnley would win, Farke substituted Largie Ramazani and Patrick Bamford in an attempt to score the game-winning goal.
However, Plymouth came very close to winning when Ryan Hardie curled a shot from within the box in the 88th minute, and two minutes later, as the home team caught Leeds on the break, Callum Wright blasted a low, timid attempt into Karl Darlow’s arms.
But Solomon surged into the penalty box and blasted low past Hazard, sending the crowded away end into raptures, just when it looked like there was no chance left for the title.
