Liverpool believe Isak has a fractured leg following injury with the MRI scan results to reveal length of spell on sidelines.
Liverpool fear Alexander Isak has fractured leg after horror injury against Spurs.
Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s record acquisition, is expected to miss months of action due to a fractured left leg.
After the £125 million player was hurt during Saturday’s Premier title match against Tottenham, the title winners are awaiting the findings of an MRI exam. When the 26-year-old scored the first goal against Spurs in the 2-1 victory, defender Micky van de Ven slid across and snagged his leg as the striker put it on the ground. This was his second league goal of an already injury-plagued rookie season.
Isak, who had entered the game as a halftime substitution and had only been in for 11 minutes, appeared to be in serious discomfort as he exited the field. Many Liverpool employees were perplexed as to why, in a game where Tottenham had two other players sent out, the challenge did not warrant a closer examination by the video assistant referee.
Arne Slot, the head coach of Liverpool, described the injury as “not a good thing” just after the game.
“If a player doesn’t even try to come back, that is usually not a good thing but I cannot say anything more than that,” he said. “That is just gut feeling and nothing medical … let’s not be too negative yet. We don’t know yet. Let’s hope he is back with us soon.”
After his lengthy summer transfer from Newcastle, the Sweden international has had a difficult time. The striker’s season has been marred by a problematic groin injury and no preseason. He scored goals against West Ham in the league and Southampton in the Carabao Cup, but he has struggled in a changing team. Ironically, prior to the devastating blow of the injury, Isak’s Liverpool career appeared to have been launched by the connection between Florian Wirtz and Isak, which set up the goal against Tottenham.
With Mohamed Salah currently at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo not expected to recover from a muscle injury until early in the new year, Isak’s prolonged absence will limit Liverpool’s forward options.
Hugo Ekitiké, who has scored five goals in his in four games, and Federico Chiesa, who is rarely played, are now Slot’s only senior attackers. Jayden Danns, an academy graduate, is recovering more quickly from a hamstring injury and may be available in the upcoming season.
