Lizelle Lee leads Hobart to first-ever WBBL crown as her 77 takes the Hurricanes to victory over the Scorchers.
Lizelle Lee undefeated 77 off 44 balls helped Hobart Hurricanes defeat Perth Scorchers and capture their first WBBL title.
Despite missing six chances in the field, the Hurricanes, who finished first in the regular season, managed to limit their opponents to 137 for 5.
Then, in front of an ecstatic home crowd on Saturday night, Lee turned on the pyrotechnics in the chase as her team pulled off the mark with eight wickets in hand and thirty balls remaining. After their male counterparts succeeded in winning the BBL title the previous season, the Hurricanes won their maiden championship in the 11th WBBL.
In the first over, Lee hit three straight boundaries, including a drop that was parried over the rope. Lee increased the intensity and concluded with 10 fours and four sixes in scenes reminiscent of Mitchell Owen’s incredible century for Hurricanes in the January BBL final.
Lee’s knock was both her best score of the season and the greatest score in a WBBL final. For most of the pursuit, she and Nat Sciver-Brunt (35 to 27) combined for 77 runs.
Alana King, a legspinner for the Scorchers who was playing well before the match, was punished by going for 0 for 25 off two overs.
