Louis van Gaal ‘no longer bothered by cancer’ as he talks about his wish to resume top-flight coaching once again.
Louis van Gaal, the former coach of the Netherlands and Manchester United, claims to have recovered from cancer and is eager to resume playing at a higher level.
Three years after revealing to an interviewer that he had prostate cancer, the 73-year-old said on Friday on the same Dutch talk show: “I’m no longer bothered by cancer.” Van Gaal was the Netherlands’ coach at the time of his sickness announcement, and he hadn’t worked since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“Two years ago, I had a few operations,” he said. “It was all bad then. But it all worked out in the end. I have check-ups every few months, and that’s going well. I’m getting fitter and fitter.”
Van Gaal, whose career has included stops at Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and United, reaffirmed that he has no interest in managing a club again, although he acknowledged that he might be persuaded to do so by the opportunity to coach a top-tier nation. He acts as Ajax’s special adviser.
