Macclesfield celebrate piece of history on poignant day for the club after a win earned against a backdrop of tragedy..
There were unforgettable moments when the final whistle blew to seal non-league Macclesfield’s incredible FA Cup upset of holders Crystal Palace. Paul Dawson, the captain, was raised into the air by the throng of spectators that flocked to the pitch.
Dawson, who had his head bandaged following an altercation early in the team’s incredible 2-1 victory, personified the team’s energy and character as they laughed at being five divisions and 117 spots lower than their Premier League rivals.
It was the biggest surprise in the long history of the esteemed sport in terms of the disparity in league spots. On the pitch, the difference was hardly noticeable; Macclesfield earned the outcome.
It was a win earned against a backdrop of tragedy.
Ethan McLeod, a forward with the Silkmen, was killed in a car accident on December 16 while returning from a National League North game at Bedford Town.
Throughout Saturday’s unforgettable day, everyone associated with Macclesfield thought of him.
At Moss Rose, a banner honouring him was displayed in the grandstand, and a photo of him hung between the dugouts. The game was attended by the 21-year-old’s parents.
“I just walked in the office then and his parents are in the office celebrating with us,” Macclesfield boss John Rooney said afterwards.
“I said to his parents: He is definitely watching down on us today. I feel he is here with us.
“To have his mum and dad here – to come into the changing room, to come into the office. That means so much to me.”
