New Zealand has named pacer Rosemary Mair and off-spinner Leigh Kasperek in their 15-member squad for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE.
Mair missed several series this year due to a back injury sustained during England’s tour in March, while Kasperek made her return to the team during that same series after a year away. This will be Kasperek’s fourth World Cup, where she’ll strengthen the spin department.
Sophie Devine, who will step down as T20I captain after the tournament, and former captain Suzie Bates are gearing up for their ninth consecutive T20 World Cup, having played since the first edition in 2009. The squad is largely experienced, with only wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze making her World Cup debut.
Devine reflected on her journey: “It’s been an honor to be part of the T20 World Cup since its inception. I’m looking forward to competing against the best teams again.”
Coach Ben Sawyer is confident in the squad’s ability to adapt to various conditions: “This group of 15 is our best for the tournament. Soph and Suze bring a wealth of experience, which will be crucial. Rosemary’s worked hard to return from injury, and we’re excited to have her back.”
New Zealand squad: Sophie Devine (C), Suzie Bates, Eden Carson, Izzy Gaze (wk), Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Fran Jonas, Leigh Kasperek, Jess Kerr, Melie Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Molly Penfold, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu.
Before heading to the World Cup, the squad will play a three-match T20I series against Australia from September 19 to 24. New Zealand is in Group A for the World Cup, alongside Australia, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, starting their campaign against India on October 4.
