Man City have appointed the former Sweden midfielder Therese Sjögran as their women’s director of football.
Nils Nielsen, the former head coach of Denmark and Switzerland, departed in June, and the 47-year-old has taken over as the Women’s Super League leaders’ replacement.
The club stated that Sjögran will be in charge of coach and player development as well as recruitment “across the women’s and girls’ pathway.” She will start on December 1st and answer to Charlotte O’Neill, the managing director.
Sjögran has been the sporting director at Rosengård since she retired as a player in 2015. She was a player for the Swedish team when it was called Malmö FF Dam.
With 214 caps, Sjögran helped Sweden go to the 2001 European Championship final and the 2003 Women’s World Cup final.
“She is an undisputed icon of the game and has made a real impact on and off the pitch in both a playing and directorial capacity over the past two decades,” O’Neill told City’s website. “We have a fantastic team working behind the scenes to help the club compete for the top honours, and Therese is an excellent addition to that cohort.”
Even though second-place Chelsea, the reigning champions, have a game left, Sjögran arrives with City leading the WSL by one point after five games. After defeating the reigning champions, Barcelona, earlier this month, Gareth Taylor’s team got off to a strong start in their maiden group-stage campaign in the Women’s Champions League.
