Man United yet to decide on new coaching change with Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola among long-term candidates.
Man United undecided on next managerial move after sacking Ruben Amorim.
After 14 months as Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim was fired on Monday morning. Following Sunday’s draw at Leeds, Amorim demands that his colleagues in the recruitment department “do their job,” which leads to his departure after a power battle with the leadership over transfer policy.
Darren Fletcher takes over as interim head coach and replaces him immediately. Former United midfielder and current under-18s coach, the Scot will captain the team against Burnley on Wednesday and may continue to do so for Sunday’s FA Cup match against Brighton.
United has not yet made a decision regarding whether to hire a permanent head coach for the rest of the season or in the summer. The process will be led by Jason Wilcox, the director of football, and Omar Berrada, the chief executive.
Fletcher would be a choice if they choose to use a caretaker coach till the end of the season. Michael Carrick, who served as United’s interim manager for three games in 2021 from late November to early December and won two of them while drawing the other, is another possible contender.
Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace is reportedly being considered for long-term replacements. Although the Austrian uses the same 3-4-3 configuration at Palace as Amorim, he is more adaptable than the Portuguese because he has expressed a desire to play a back four.
Two other options that could be taken into consideration are Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth and the jobless Enzo Maresca. In the summer of 2024, Thomas Tuchel was on the verge of taking Erik ten Hag’s place, but as England’s manager, he would like to be managing the national team at the World Cup in July, which might be too late for United to appoint him.
