Manchester police drop all charges against Haider Ali.
All charges against Pakistani cricketer Haider Ali, who was detained by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in the UK last month on suspicion of rape, have been dropped, ending the inquiry. Haider is now free to depart the United Kingdom after being freed on bail after his detention.
“We always take allegations of this nature very seriously and will assess each incident thoroughly,” the GMP told. “Following a comprehensive review of all available evidence, the investigation has been closed at this time. Should any further information come to light, we would review the material and case again appropriately.”
Haider, 24, played against a select XI in Beckenham and Hove while on tour with the Shaheens, essentially a Pakistan A team, in the United Kingdom. On August 3, when GMP officers showed up at the Beckenham stadium for a game, Haider was taken into custody. Haider played in the Shaheens’ first tour match on July 23, the day after the alleged offence that led to the arrest took place in Manchester, according to a GMP statement at the time. The claimed victim was being “supported by officers” at the time, and Haider was out on bond.
Haider has represented Pakistan in 35 T20Is and two ODIs. His reputation as a devastating hitter was first enhanced by his exceptional PSL achievements with Peshawar Zalmi in 2020, where he amassed 239 runs at a strike rate of 157.23. Later that year, he was called up to the national team, making his debut in a Twenty20 International match in Manchester, where he hit a 54 off 33 balls to help Pakistan win by five runs.
Since then, he has been plagued by inconsistency and has alternated between the Pakistani side on several occasions. The current Shaheens tour was generally seen as a chance to reintegrate a player whose batting style fits with the aggressive style Pakistan’s current T20 set-up has made no secret of wanting to pursue. Nevertheless, his talent and explosiveness have kept him in international contention.
