Martin O’Neill replaces Brendan Rodgers at Celtic after the latter decided to resign from his post as head coach.
Major shareholder Dermot Desmond accused Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers of “divisive, misleading, and self-serving” actions, which led to Rodgers’ resignation. Former manager Martin O’Neill would take over in the interim.
After losing 3-1 at Tynecastle on Sunday, the Scottish Premiership winners are now eight points behind early leaders Heart of Midlothian.
Celtic has also had a challenging transfer window and a disappointing European campaign.
In the 134-word letter, Rodgers announced his resignation, expressed gratitude for his contributions during his two terms as manager, and stated that the process of selecting a replacement was in progress.
In a stunning turn of events, it also stated that O’Neill, who is 73 years old and his previous tenure ended 20 years ago, will assume temporary leadership with the help of former Celtic player Shaun Maloney, who was fired as manager of Wigan Athletic in March.
As Celtic supporters were processing that, the team released a second statement, this one signed by the typically reserved Desmond.
Desmond blasted Rodgers’ “desire for self-preservation at the expense of others” and refuted his claim that he was not formally offered a contract extension in an astonishing letter to supporters. He also claimed that the manager was forced to make any signings.
