Maxwell wants a bigger role with the ball in Powerplay as he believes he can contribute more with the ball.
In the upcoming T20 World Cup, Glenn Maxwell hopes to play a larger role with the ball, particularly in the PowerPlay. Maxwell bowled two overs each with the new ball in the past two Twenty20 Internationals against South Africa, demonstrating that he is not afraid of the challenge.
He has taken 17 of his 49 wickets in T20Is in the PowerPlay, and he has been even more successful in the IPL. Maxwell has taken eight crucial wickets while bowling at an impressive economy rate of 7.30 in the first six overs since the 2022 tournament. In the just finished second Twenty20 International, he also took the big wicket of Aiden Markram, and there were wild celebrations thereafter.
“I think in the subcontinent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on,” Maxwell told reporters in Cairns on Thursday ahead of the final T20I. “Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces. So it might be something we think about heading forward.”
“I’m just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket,” Maxwell said on his celebration. “I love getting wickets. It’s very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I’m there to do a job in the PowerPlay and I’m trying to execute that as well as I can.”
The 36-year-old is more than happy to be adaptable and contribute in accordance with the demands of the squad in his batting capacity. Maxwell began the batting in the West Indies to face Akeal Hosein in the PowerPlay when Travis Head was not available, but he has since been demoted to a finisher’s role, particularly after Tim David, who is playing well, was promoted. In the first game, he batted at number seven, and in the second, at number five.
“I’ve been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down,” Maxwell said. “I’m filling holes at the moment. Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end. (I’m) trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible.”
