Mayank Agarwal signs with Yorkshire and will join the team ahead of game against Somerset starting September 8.
For the duration of the County Championship, India opener Mayank Agarwal is expected to sign a short-term contract with Yorkshire.
Agarwal will play three games overall before heading back to India in time for the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season. He is anticipated to join the team prior to their match against Somerset on Taunton beginning September 8. Agarwal will be serving in the county for the first time.
His most recent appearance came at Karnataka’s premier T20 competition, the Maharaja T20 Trophy. Before that, he played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he won an IPL title despite being signed as a last-minute substitute for Devdutt Padikkal, who was injured.
With two prior trips with the Test team—in 2021–22 and for the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023—Agarwal, 34, is no stranger to England.
During the 2021–22 trip, which India drew 2-2, he was scheduled to open, but he was sidelined before the series opener because of a concussion. Additionally, he has accompanied the India A squad on two visits.
Agarwal has extensive first-class experience and is now the captain of Karnataka in all formats. With 18 hundreds and 44 half-centuries, he has amassed 8050 runs at an average of 43.98 in 190 innings.
Agarwal has amassed four Test hundreds, including a best of 243 against South Africa, and 1488 Test runs at an average of 41.33 in 36 innings. His most recent 21 Test matches were against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in March 2022.
Khaleel Ahmed (Essex), Tilak Varma (Hampshire), Yuzvendra Chahal (Northants), Ishan Kishan (Notts), and Sai Kishore (Surrey) are more well-known Indians who will play in the UK domestic season this year. This month, Jaydev Unadkat is scheduled to join Sussex.
