Miller and Ngidi latest injury scares for South Africa as both players suffered niggles during the ongoing SA20.
Miller and Ngidi add to South Africa’s injury concerns.
Senior fast bowler Lungi Ngidi departed the pitch after bowling two overs in the SA20, while seasoned hitter David Miller injured his groin, adding to South Africa’s injury total ahead of the T20 World Cup next month.
Miller’s accident happened on Monday while he was fielding for the Paarl Royals in the tournament’s last group game. He did not bat since the Royals were chasing 167 against the Johannesburg Super Kings (JSK) and were well out of the game. The outcome caused the Royals to fall to third place in the standings. On Thursday, they will play JSK in the Eliminator at Centurion.
Due to Donovan Ferreira’s shoulder fracture during the SA20, South Africa is already set to be without him. They are also awaiting Tony de Zorzi’s fitness, as he hasn’t played since December due to a hamstring injury in India. De Zorzi is anticipated to be healthy for next week’s three Twenty20 Internationals against the West Indies. MICT and DSG members are likely to be called up because the squad for that series will be announced on Thursday and is anticipated to include players whose SA20 teams were eliminated early.
It might eliminate Tristan Stubbs and Ottneil Baartman, who are both competing in the SA20 playoffs, but it might include Ryan Rickelton, who might be considered for the T20 World Cup if de Zorzi is sidelined. If Ferreira and Ngidi need to be replaced, Stubbs and Baartman are the front-runners. The ICC’s Event Technical Committee may approve changes to T20 World Cup squads after January 31 for any reason, including tournament-ending injuries.
