Millie Bright opts out of Euro 2025 squad in what is another major blow for England Lionesses ahead of the tournament.
On the day of Sarina Wiegman’s announcement of her final 23-man team, vice captain Millie Bright pulled out of contention for the competition in Switzerland next month, dealing England yet another serious setback to their aspirations of defending the European Championship crown this summer.
Bright stated that the choice “is the right thing for my health and my future,” and it is believed that her colleagues have been fully supporting her in putting her physical and mental well-being first. But the decision, which comes soon after the announcement of Mary Earps and Fran Kirby’s retirements from international football, is a major blow to Wiegman ahead of the defence of the trophy England won three years ago.
“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make but after careful thought and discussions with my team, I have decided to withdraw from selection for the England squad ahead of Euro 2025,” Bright said on Instagram. “Football has given me so much and representing my country has always been my greatest honour. My pride and ego tells me to go but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now I’m not able to give 100% mentally or physically.
“As much as I want to be out there running through brick walls for England and fighting alongside my teammates, stepping back is the right thing for my health, my future, the game and most importantly the team. It wouldn’t be fair for me to take the place and opportunity away from another player who is ready to give everything for the badge and country.”
The 31-year-old, who has earned 88 caps and six goals for her country, pulled out of England’s most recent Nations League games against Portugal and Spain in order to give herself more time to heal. She told the Daly Brightness podcast that she needed to take care of her mental health in addition to allowing her body to rest. This season, Bright led Chelsea to a domestic triple crown.
“I’ll be supporting the team with everything I’ve got, and hoping this incredible group of players will do the nation proud. Thank you to my teammates, coaches and, most importantly, the fans for your unwavering support, it means the world to me.”
