Mitchell makes magic to turn lost cause into a win for Texas Super Kings as MI New York fell three runs short in an MLC 2025 contest of major twists and turns.
The opening game of MLC 2025 was made unforgettable by Finn Allen’s record-breaking 51-ball 151, but the second game of the season was just as exciting. Two teams, whose more well-known siblings have fought a lot in the IPL, played out a thriller that had as many twists and turns as a 40-over match could possibly have.
Seeking 186 to defeat the Texas Super Kings in Michigan Daryl Mitchell, who had set off the last game-changing moment, bowled a final over of yorkers and slower deliveries to give up just five runs as New York appeared out of the battle, then roared right back, lost it, found it again, and then stopped three runs short.
Even though MINY needed 27 from 20 balls with six wickets remaining, TSK made a spectacular comeback and won the match.
With the scoreboard showing 32 for 3 following the powerplay, the chase had gotten off to a terrible start for MINY. Although it wasn’t a big chase, you wouldn’t want to lose Agni Chopra, Nicholas Pooran, and Quinton de Kock that quickly. However, it was made possible by Adam Milne and Noor Ahmad. Monank Patel, the No. 3 bowler, and Michael Bracewell, who had previously been MINY’s greatest bowler, decided to rebuild the innings since it needed to be done.
Bracewell hit a four between Pooran’s expulsion and the end of the seventh over, but they managed to steady the ship first. They needed a little boost, though, and in the next five overs they scored 11, 16, 15, 14, and 17. Suddenly, even Stevens was needed—76 out of 48.
Bracewell appeared to join Monank at the halfway point after he reached his half-century off 33 balls, but Milne’s return gave the story a twist, even if it was actually Faf du Plessis’ wicket more than anyone else’s. Du Plessis leaped and snatched the ball out of the air one-handed at wide mid-off after Milne bowled short outside off and Bracewell thrashed it.
The true turning point was a few overs later, if that had any hints of one. Against Mitchell’s slow, medium pace, Kieron Pollard, 38, who was replaced as team captain by Pooran, went 4, 6, 4, and 4 to make it 27 needed from 20. Until Mitchell’s quick pick-up-throw-the-stumps-down move sent Monank and Pollard reeling off consecutive deliveries.
That was the right moment of change. Only three fours were hit in the final three overs, two more wickets were lost, and Mitchell’s final over, which had three runs off the bat and a leg-bye and a bye, might have ended the match with a single big shot.
