Mitchell Owen set for bigger things and even bigger paydays after leading Hobart Hurricanes to their maiden BBL title.
Mitchell Owen put his name up in lights with an astonishing display in the BBL final.
Mitch Owen stated the day before the BBL began that he had no idea where he will bat for the Hobart Hurricanes this season, if at all.
Owen, who leads the league in runs scored, can begin to aim higher after setting a new record to win the competition for his hometown team. In franchise cricket, the 23-year-old is expected to make enormous sums of money, possibly beginning with a replacement contract at the Indian Premier League.
After registering for the auction longlist late last year but not making the shortlist, Owen’s manager announced that he is available as a replacement player for the IPL. He might also consider the Pakistan Super League, which essentially runs in parallel with the IPL in April and May.
Hobart won their maiden BBL victory because to Owen’s stunning knock of 108 off just 42 balls, which was the equal-fastest tonne in competition history from 39 deliveries. The sold-out crowd was chanting his name. Owen has only made six appearances for the Hurricanes in the previous two seasons, scoring 42 runs overall.
“I feel a bit awkward in these situations. I don’t really know how to take it,” Owen said of the adoration. “It’s super special… the most special thing is hearing everyone in the crowd enjoying it. And I’m so grateful, I’m so proud that we could bring this trophy to Tassie.”
Hurricanes team-mate and 2021 T20 World Cup winner Matthew Wade agreed Owen “would be there or thereabouts” when it came to squad selection for the 2026 tournament.
“He can be anything… no stage really worries him too much. It was phenomenal,” Wade told AAP.
