Mlaba lands in hot water for her send-off to Harleen Deol, getting her a demerit point for her provocative send-off.
Mlaba handed demerit point for waving at Deol.
Nonkululeko Mlaba, a left-arm spinner for South Africa, received a demerit point for violating the ICC’s code of conduct during the Women’s World Cup match against India.
An ICC statement on Saturday stated that the event “could have provoked an aggressive response” when Mlaba waved goodbye to Harleen Deol following his dismissal in the 17th over of India’s innings.
Mlaba was judged to have breached Article 2.5, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”
The accusation was made by fourth umpire Sue Redfern, third umpire Candace le Borde, and on-field umpires Kim Cotton and Jacquline Williams. Mlaba acknowledged the violation and agreed to the punishment that match referee Trudy Anderson suggested. Additionally, an official reprimand was part of the sentence.
This demerit point will be carried over by Mlaba for a full 24 months. A player may be suspended for one Test, two ODIs, or two T20Is, whichever comes first, if they accrue four or more demerit points during this time frame.
South Africa defeated India in a thrilling match on Thursday, chasing down 252 to record their second World Cup victory in three games. Mlaba finished the game with a 2 for 46 record.
