Mussolini’s great-grandson makes Serie A debut.
In his Serie A debut on Friday, Romano Floriani Mussolini, the great-grandson of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, came off the bench to assist Cremonese upset Sassuolo 3-2.
With two wins in two games, the newly promoted team topped the Serie A standings. Manuel de Luca scored the game-winning penalty after Floriani Mussolini, 22, was introduced with eight minutes left.
In Cremonese’s Serie A opener against AC Milan last week, the right-back, who is on loan from Lazio, did not play.
“Too many things happened in too little time, I don’t think I’ll ever forget the night because I’ve always dreamed of making my debut in Serie A,” said Floriani Mussolini.
“My goal was to make a difference and I’m happy that I managed to do that.”
‘Romano’ is printed on the back of Floriani Mussolini’s jersey, which he wears at Cremonese.
Although he rose through the ranks at Lazio, he never played for the Biancocelesti in the top division of Italy.
In 2023–24, he was loaned to Pescara, a team in the third division, then in 2024–25, he was sent to Juve Stabia, a team in the second division.
The club vehemently denied accusations that Juve Stabia supporters gave fascist salutes in celebration of his goal against Cesena in December.
When joining Cremonese in the summer, Floriani Mussolini said he was “here to play football”, adding: “My surname bothers other people more than me.”
Italy’s National Fascist Party was created by Benito Mussolini, who ruled the nation from 1922 until his defeat in 1943. He was caught and murdered in 1945 after siding with Adolf Hitler during World War II.
