Nic Maddinson charts his comeback trail via BBL for the Sydney Thunder having recently returned to competitive cricket.
After re-signing with the Sydney Thunder, Nic Maddinson may make a comeback to top cricket during the Big Bash.
General manager Trent Copeland supported Maddinson’s return to the field this summer, and the Thunder confirmed a new one-season contract for the 33-year-old on Tuesday.
Before receiving a testicular cancer diagnosis, Maddinson last participated in elite cricket in the Sheffield Shield in March with New South Wales. After the cancer was found to have progressed to his lung and abdominal lymph nodes, he completed nine weeks of chemotherapy in July.
“I’m really happy to be staying with Thunder,” Maddinson said. “There’s been a few setbacks for myself lately, but I’ve had amazing support from my friends, family and the club.
“Now I’m just keen to lock in, get the season started and hopefully help the boys go one better than last year.”
In 2016, Maddinson participated in three Test matches for Australia, and in 2018, he played his final T20 match. Before relocating to Victoria and joining the Melbourne Stars in 2018–19 and the Renegades in 2021–2022, he started his BBL career with the Sydney Sixers.
Left-handed Last summer, Maddinson signed a contract to play for Thunder and returned to New South Wales. However, a hand injury prevented him from competing, therefore he was unable to run out for the team.
“We are pleased to have Maddo re-sign with us at Sydney Thunder,” Copeland said. “I know how eager he was to play in front of the Thunder Nation before his injury, and I know that eagerness has doubled since then. We’re backing Maddo to make a real impact this season, both at the crease and through his leadership around the team.”
