‘Let’s embrace change’: Nuno believes West Ham can turn season around.
According to Nuno Espírito Santo, West Ham’s players have accepted responsibility for the team’s subpar performance during the previous 18 months and are prepared to reform.
After taking over for Graham Potter last weekend, Nuno, the team’s third manager since David Moyes left at the end of the 2023–24 campaign, is looking to change the atmosphere in the locker room. There has been a lack of leadership at West Ham, and the team acknowledges that they contributed to Potter’s termination after eight months.
“I find a nice group of people,” Nuno said. “They are starting to realise that we have to change things. If we don’t change, things will be the same. They are willing to change. I can see it. So let’s embrace it and let’s change it.
“It goes from technical, tactical, physical, mentality, respect, communication. Communication is such an important tool for us. We still don’t have it fully. It has to be a fair and clear communication that we share. They have accounted themselves responsible and are willing to go.”
Nuno’s time to adapt has been limited. The former Nottingham Forest manager is not considering what West Ham, who are now in 19th place before their Saturday visit to Arsenal, can accomplish this season, as he does not yet have his backroom staff. “I have an easy task,” Nuno stated. “Tomorrow,”
Nuno is very concerned about strengthening his team’s set-piece defence. Nuno’s first game, a 1-1 draw at Everton on Monday, was the most recent of West Ham’s eight goals from corners this season. The team will be under constant pressure from dead balls against Arsenal. Nuno is concerned that it might turn into a psychological problem.
“It can,” he said. “But we will try to avoid it. The worst thing that can happen is that if an opponent gets a corner we start immediately thinking that we are in trouble. It can become a trauma.”
