ODI aspirations on hold for Tim David as of now as he sets his sights on a crucial T20 year on the horizon for him.
Tim David parks ODI thoughts ahead of big T20I year.
Tim David says he has no immediate plans to play any List A cricket to support his case for an ODI recall, but the potential of him being considered has been left open by Glenn Maxwell’s retirement and the rebuilding of Australia’s ODI team in preparation for the 2027 World Cup.
David, 29, has been a regular of Australia’s T20I team since 2022 and is well-known throughout the world as a T20 finisher. Prior to the 2023 World Cup in India, when Maxwell was sidelined due to injury, Australia’s selectors selected him for four ODI matches in South Africa because they thought he could adapt his qualities to ODI cricket.
At the time of his selection, he had not participated in a List A 50-over match since 2021, the year he scored two hundreds for Surrey in the English Royal London Cup.
Although he does not currently have a domestic contract in Australia, David has recommitted to the Hobart Hurricanes for two more seasons in the BBL. Prior to representing Singapore, he was classified as a rookie with Western Australia in 2017–18. Since then, he has not had a domestic contract, however he did play one game for Tasmania in Australia’s domestic One-Day Cup in November 2021. Since his last ODI in 2023, he has not participated in a 50-over List A match.
After losing Steven Smith to retirement, Australia will need to add some finishing power to a side that will be restructured over the following two years as a result of Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis’ retirements from ODI cricket.
David stated that while he has no immediate plans for ODI selection, he has been discussing his future career with his personal mentors and does not appear to have ruled anything out.
“Definitely having conversations in the background with my coaches, and people that I want to talk to about my game at the moment,” David said on Tuesday. “I’m not too sure, to be honest. It’s not the immediate plan. We’ve got such a busy year, to be honest, leading up to this T20 World Cup. The winter actually looks quite different for me this year. Previously, I would have been away for four or five months in a row over the winter playing competitions. And now we’ve got so many T20 series that there’s not much time to think about much else. So we’ll see how that develops. But, at the moment, no plans.”
