Onana injured ahead of Man United pre season tour and is set to miss the journey, with Bayindir to be first-choice.
Andre Onana, the custodian for Manchester United, will miss the team’s preseason trip to the United States due to a hamstring injury he sustained during practice.
Although he will still fly to America for the three-game Premier League Summer Series later in July, the 29-year-old Cameroon international will use that time to recuperate. He has responded well to first therapy.
This implies that Ruben Amorim’s first-choice custodian in preseason will probably be 27-year-old Altay Bayindir.
Despite the former Inter Milan keeper’s own decline in form, the Turkey international’s future at Old Trafford was seriously questioned after he was passed over for selection in the Europa League final in May by Onana.
Although there was conjecture at the close of the previous season that United might search for substitute goalkeepers, it is unclear if Onana’s injury will force them to go elsewhere.
Onana, who returned for preseason training with the hope that he would stay first-choice despite a string of high-profile errors since signing from Inter in a £47.2 million transfer in 2023, said he trusted Amorim.
This Thursday, 39-year-old former England international Tom Heaton agreed to a new one-year contract deal.
Other goalkeeping alternatives for United include Poland youth international Hubert Graczyk, 19-year-old Elyh Harrison, 22-year-old Dermot Mee, and 21-year-old Czech Republic youth international Radek Vitek, who made an impression while on loan at Austrian FC Blau-Weiss Linz last season. Despite having little senior experience, Amorim put them all on the bench near the end of the campaign.
On July 19, United takes on rival Leeds in Stockholm to begin their preseason campaign.
They prepare for their match against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on 9 August after playing West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton in the United States from 27 to August 3.
