Owen given Australia ODI call-up for the South Africa series with Marnus Labuschagne keeping his spot as well.
Owen earns ODI call-up to face South Africa, Labuschagne retained.
After a strong start with the T20I team, Mitchell Owen has earned his first ODI call-up to play South Africa in northern Australia next month. Lance Morris, a fast bowler, has also been called up to the 50-over squad.
While Matt Short has recovered from the side strain that kept him out of those Twenty20 Internationals, Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood have returned to the T20I and ODI squads after being rested for the West Indies series. Mitchell Marsh will take over as ODI captain, and Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will miss both series as they continue to recuperate before the home summer.
Owen, who assumed a middle-order finishing role, scored 125 runs at a strike-rate of 192.30 against the West Indies, including a half-century on his debut in Jamaica. He scored an incredible 149 off 69 balls for Tasmania versus South Australia in the One-Day Cup last season.
Marnus Labuschagne maintains his spot in the ODI squad after being left off of the Test squad in the Caribbean, as noted by head coach Andrew McDonald during the West Indies tour.
Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly, and Xavier Bartlett will not play in the Twenty20 Internationals match against South Africa. They were part of the team that won the 5-0 sweep of the West Indies. Bartlett has been added for the three ODIs, though.
Connolly made 13 and 0 in his two innings and took one wicket, while Fraser-McGurk was a late addition to the team following Short’s injury and only participated in one match. At the end of the series, Hardie made two valuable contributions, including leading the last pursuit home to earn the whitewash.
The first two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) of the South Africa trip will take place in Darwin on August 10 and 12. The series’ final game will take place in Cairns on August 16, with the first ODI taking place on August 19. Then, on August 22 and 24, two games in Mackay will wrap up the 50-over series.
