Pep Guardiola agrees new one-year extension with Man City to allay any fears that surrounded his uncertainty.
Pep Guardiola agrees a new one-year contract with Manchester City in a huge boost for the Premier League champions. The new terms of his contract will take his tenure to the summer of 2026.
Guardiola took some time throughout the summer to think on his future after City’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup final in May. According to the Guardian, he was considering making a decision this winter.
While visiting Abu Dhabi, the home country of the club’s owner, Sheikh Mansour, in November, the manager agreed to his last two contract extensions. Guardiola was asked if he had any plans to return to Brighton during the international break prior to City’s 2-1 loss there on November 9, their final game before the break.
He said: “No. I said many times, I won’t talk about it [a new contract]. When it happens, it will happen. We’re in touch regularly.”
For the first time in his 15-year managerial tenure, Guardiola has watched City lose four straight games. With 23 points from their first 11 games, they are five points behind league leaders Liverpool and in second place.
In addition, the club is defending itself before an impartial committee against the Premier League’s more than 100 accusations of financial misconduct. Guardiola’s decision shows a newfound drive and ambition to deliver more success to the club he took over in the summer of 2016, and City denies all of the claims.
Guardiola is currently City’s most successful manager. The 53-year-old has led City to six Premier League trophies in his eight years at the club, including the record-tying last four consecutive ones. In 2023, he also won two FA Cups, four League Cups, and City’s first Champions League.
