Pindi takes centre stage as Pakistan, SL and Zimbabwe scramble for World Cup spark.
The Men’s T20 World Cup is in two and a half months, so it’s time to start taking things seriously. There are players who need to adjust to the tempo and rhythm of Twenty20 cricket, teams that need to be finalised, and methods that need to be tested.
This tri-series series offers Pakistan an opportunity to improve on some of this year’s T20 accomplishments. In 2025, they have won 17 Twenty20 Internationals compared to 12 losses. During that run, they defeated South Africa 2-1 in their most recent Twenty20 International series and advanced to the Asia Cup final. Even though bowling has tended to win Pakistan games, batting has had a little more purpose under Salman Agha’s guidance.
For instance, the bowlers had twice held the visitors to pitiful scores in the series against South Africa. However, Pakistan’s two wins were comfortable, and the chases were generally easy. Putting the opposition in and attempting to blow them away cheaply appears to be the most popular tactic.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka hasn’t been particularly successful in this style either. Although it is less noticeable when Pathum Nissanka fires at the top of the order, the batting order’s long-standing firepower problems still exist. They are also attempting to find out their combinations, often appearing to be either a batter or a bowler short against elite opponents.
It hasn’t been this hot in Zimbabwe in a long time. At least they have dominated the Africa qualification and secured a spot in the main event, unlike for the 2024 World Cup. They achieved their most remarkable run of 2025 in that qualification, which was played entirely in Harare. They won five straight games, including the final against Namibia, who have also qualified for the World Cup.
However, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, who recently suffered a 3-0 defeat to Afghanistan, would probably present a far more formidable challenge than the lower-ranked sides Zimbabwe faced in Harare. However, they just defeated Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 International.
After two games in Rawalpindi, the tri-series between Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka was supposed to continue to Lahore; however, a change has been made because to security concerns following the explosion in Islamabad last week. The full competition will now take place in Rawalpindi.
