On December 26, Sourav Ganguly will take over as the Pretoria Capitals’ new head coach for the fourth SA20 season. Shaun Pollock, a former South Africa captain who was appointed the team’s assistant coach on Monday, will join him.
Ganguly, who has served as the director of cricket for JSW Sports, the Pretoria Capitals’ parent business, since last year, takes over the position from Jonathan Trott. Having been a member of the coaching team with the Mumbai Indians in the early years of the IPL, Pollock will eventually assume a coaching role. He also temporarily served as a consultant for the South Africa team.
The Pretoria Capitals have had a mixed start to the event; they lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final after finishing first in the group stage in the first season. They have experienced more mediocre outcomes in the two seasons since, 2023–24 and 2024–25, finishing in fifth place both times and missing out on the playoffs.
With the new hires, the Pretoria Capitals will be hopeful that their fortunes improve. The player auction on September 9 will be their first priority as the Capitals try to restock their roster.
Ganguly will take on the role of head coach for the first time. He served as the Cricket Association of Bengal’s president for four years, from 2015 to 2019. He became the BCCI president shortly after joining the Delhi Capitals as a mentor for the 2019 campaign.
His employment as JSW’s director of cricket last year has since brought him one step closer to coaching one of their teams, which also includes the Delhi Capitals, who co-own the IPL and WPL with GMR.
