Rangers part ways with Philippe Clement after loss to St Mirren leaving them 13 points behind Celtic and out of Scottish Cup.
Rangers have sacked their manager Philippe Clement after their latest loss to St. Mirren in the Scottish Premiership.
The Belgian is relieved of his duties after 16 months in charge of the club. At the time of sacking, Rangers find themselves 13 points behind Celtic as well as eliminated from the Scottish cup.
A statement from Rangers on Sunday evening read: “Rangers Football Club can confirm it has tonight parted company with men’s first-team manager, Philippe Clement.
“The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge. A further update from the club will follow in due course.”
Two months after taking Michael Beale’s place in October 2023, Clement guided Rangers to the League Cup. They ended eight points behind Celtic last season, despite being briefly in title contention under the former manager of Club Brugge and Monaco. His early months on the job were filled with promise, but he was never able to regain it.
Despite leading the team to the Europa League round of 16, where they will play Fenerbahce next month, the 50-year-old leaves Ibrox with Rangers far behind Celtic in the league and without a domestic title at the end of the season.
Rangers’ comparatively excellent home form at least kept them out of the pack in second place, despite the fact that they have only won five of their 13 away Premiership games this season.
Their recently hired chief executive, Patrick Stewart, had twice backed the increasingly struggling management.
However, their last two Ibrox results in effect signalled the end for the 50-year-old, who described Saturday’s display in the 2-0 defeat by St Mirren as “by far the worst I’ve seen in all the time I’ve been here”.
