Rishabh Pant’s heroic innings in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Gabba has etched a permanent place in Indian cricket history. Pant’s unbeaten 89 on the final day of the fourth Test helped India chase a daunting target of 328, securing a memorable victory by three wickets and sealing a historic series win. The victory not only marked the end of Australia’s 32-year unbeaten streak at the Gabba but also showcased Pant’s exceptional skills and fearless approach under pressure.
In a recent interaction, Pant revisited the memories of that remarkable match and the significance of his performance. Reflecting on his emotional contribution, Pant admitted that he did not fully comprehend the importance of his knock at the time. “I always aim to give my best, but some performances stay with you forever. The Gabba Test is one such memory,” he shared during a Star Sports event.
Pant revealed that it was only after receiving praise from Rohit Sharma that he began to understand the depth of his achievement. Rohit, in his usual encouraging manner, told Pant, “You don’t know what you’ve done.” At that moment, Pant was confused, as his only goal was to win the match for India. However, as time passed and he heard others talk about the significance of that match, he truly grasped the magnitude of his performance. “Now, whenever I hear people talking about that Gabba match, I understand what he meant and how important it was,” Pant added.
This historic victory not only showcased Pant’s immense talent but also highlighted India’s resilience and determination. The team, weakened by injuries to key players, faced a steep challenge in the final Test. But Pant, along with Shubman Gill and others, put together a stunning chase, embodying India’s never-give-up attitude. Pant’s performance on that day not only helped India win the series but also cemented his place as a key figure in Indian cricket.
As the Indian team prepares for another tour of Australia, Pant is eager to replicate his success on Australian soil. His fearless mentality and readiness to face any challenge continue to drive him. Reflecting on Australia’s aggressive style of play, Pant expressed, “They don’t give you anything easy, and they play aggressive cricket. I won’t throw the first punch, but if someone throws the first punch at me, I won’t hold back”.
As one of India’s brightest talents, Pant’s Gabba heroics will forever be remembered as a symbol of determination, bravery, and skill under pressure.
