Rubiales egged in his book launch event by a man who is alleged to be his uncle, who threw three egss in his direction.
When Luis Rubiales, the disgraced former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), presented his new book in Madrid on Thursday, his uncle allegedly threw eggs at him.
The guy Rubiales said was his uncle tossed three eggs at the 48-year-old, who was found guilty of sexual assault for forcing a kiss on player Jenni Hermoso. Rubiales seemed to be hit on the back by one egg.
“I’ve found out he was my own uncle, Luis Ruben he’s called. An uncle who is my age,” Rubiales told news portal Periodista Digital. “He threw eggs at me because he’s a deranged person, and I don’t think there’s any justification for it. They’ve arrested him, they’ve taken him away and, well, we’ll have to take action against him because I honestly thought he was armed.”
Before being stopped by other attendees to present his book “Matar a Rubiales” (Killing Rubiales), Rubiales attempted to pursue his uncle. Rubiales asserted earlier this week on Spanish television that he was the victim of a “sudden far-left movement” that fabricated a “parallel reality” in order to profit from the controversy surrounding his forced kiss on Hermoso.
After Spain won the Women’s World Cup in Sydney in August 2023, Rubiales was fined €10,800 for forcing a kiss on Hermoso at the medal ceremony. The former head of the RFEF maintains that it was consensual, and after a Spanish appeals court confirmed his fine in June, his attorney declared he will challenge the verdict at the Supreme Court.
A non-consensual kiss may be classified as sexual assault under Spain’s penal code, which covers all forms of sexual abuse.
Rubiales was forced to resign from his position due to the worldwide outcry caused by the incident, which also resulted in a three-year ban from all football-related activities and a protracted period of unrest inside the federation. Hermoso, the national women’s team’s all-time best scorer, became a focal point in the struggle against sexism and macho culture in sports as a result of the controversy.
