Rudiger looking at a potential ban for throwing object at referee.
Shortly before the final whistle, he and Real Madrid teammate Lucas Vazquez, who had both been removed, were sent off for an angry response to a foul on Kylian Mbappe.
Jude Bellingham, a 21-year-old England midfielder for Real Madrid, was also dismissed for disobedience.
“Throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me” was the reason for Rudiger’s dismissal, according to referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea’s report. Rudiger is 32 years old. The official was allegedly thrown an ice cube by Rudiger.
The disciplinary code of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) may result in a long-term ban for the Germany defender.
Rudiger might be suspended for four to twelve games if he is found guilty of “mild violence” against referees under article 101.
Article 104, which addresses “assault against referees,” stipulates that players may face a three- to six-month ban if their acts are judged to be more serious and “the act was a single act and did not cause any harmful consequences.”
The punishment could last anything from six months to a year if the act is judged to have created a “serious risk” even in the absence of the referee needing medical attention.
Real Madrid striker Mbappe attempted to drive into the penalty area and shrug off Barcelona defender Eric Garcia in the closing seconds, but he was given a foul.
Rudiger appeared to throw something at De Burgos Bengoetxea, which led to his dismissal, and the Real bench responded angrily. Members of the coaching staff then had to detain him as well.
Vazquez, 33, was dismissed for questioning the judgement on the pitch of play.
“You can see something is thrown – [Rudiger] is in big trouble, it doesn’t miss the referee by a million miles, it’s at the referee,” said Premier Sports commentator Terry Gibson.
“It’s pathetic from the Real Madrid players.”
